International Standards on Countering Terrorism

There is not yet a comprehensive convention on international terrorism concluded within the United Nations owing to disagreement among States about the scope of terrorism. Regional treaties on terrorism exist around the world and at global level there are sectoral treaties on particular issues.

The most important sectoral treaties within the United Nations concern the protection of foreign diplomats, the prohibition on hostage-taking, the Terrorist Bombings Convention, the 1999 Terrorist Financing Convention, and the 2005 Nuclear Terrorism Convention.
